Belize River, Belize

We will be fly fishing for Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and Snook on sections of the Belize and Sibun Rivers and in and arounds the saltwater flats and mangrove-lined cayes and canals of central Belize. Tarpon here range from baby tarpon to large resident and migratory fish. Bonefish are plentiful and Snook and Permit offer the novice and experienced angler alike the opportunity to pursue the ellusive saltwater Grand Slam and Super Grand Slam along with the unique Back Country Grand Slam on most days on the water. We will be on the water for 8+ hours of guided fishing per day, for five days. Our guides are friendly, extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled at polishing your technique and maximizing your fishing time! The lodge and river are situated in a lush tropical climate; so don't be surprised if you sopt tropical birds, iguanas, crocodiles, dolphin and manatee, or howler monkeys during the day. We fish from panga skiffs designed to carry two fishermen plus your guide, and if conditions permit we may disembark and wade an off-shore flat for Bonefish and/or Permit. Belize recently designated all Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish as Catch and Release only to help preserve and sustain this diverse saltwater fishery. An occasional Snook or Snapper may be kept for the dinner table.

Food

All meals are included in this trip, beginning with dinner the day of your arrival, and culminating with a hearty send-off breakfast the morning of departure. Breakfast and dinner are served family style in the spacious dining room of the Main Lodge -- and it's not uncommon to enjoy a local preparation of the day's catch for dinner. Hors d'oeuvres are served nightly in the Main Lodge's screened-in patio before dinner. Joined by our host, Mike, it's the perfect setting to recount the day's highlights and learn about this great county. Your packed lunch will include a deli-style sandwich with all the fixin's, and an assortment of chips, baked goods, water and soft drinks. Local ice-cold Belekin beer and an assortment of wine and liquors for mixed drinks are available at the lodge (additional charge).

Lodging

We have the lodge to ourselves for the entire week! There are five comfortable riverside rooms, each carpeted and air-conditioned, with plenty of storage room for fishing gear and personal items. Each room has a private bathroom, including shower and vanity along with a covered, screened-in porch with hammock and storage racks for your fly rods. There are no TVs. International calling cards are available for purchase. The lodge also offers the opportunity for up to four anglers to fish and snorkle from a luxurious 52' live-aboard mothership for trips of four or more full days of fishing.

Travel

Plan your flight to arrive in Belize City, Belize (BZE) on Sunday. Schedule your departure flight to leave on the following Saturday. Pick-up and transfer to/from Belize International Airport is complimentary and includes a short 10-minute ride by auto followed by a short boar ride across the Belize River to the lodge. Contact us if you would like assistance with air transportation. Travel insurance is highly recommended.

Fishing Gear

Fly rods should be 7wt-8wt (bonefish, snook), 9wt (permit) and 10wt-12wt (tarpon) with large-arbor reels and a floating saltwater line. Flats wading boots and a striping basket are optional but recommended if you hope to get out of your skiff and wade. Flies are available for purchase at the lodge. Plan to dress in convertible pants and long-sleeved shirts best suited to protect you from sun and wind exposure while keeping you comfortable, and always have rain gear available. Some other items to consider packing: camera, polarized sunglasses, hat, binoculars, travel alarm, insect repellant and sunscreen/chapstick.

Non-fishing Activities

The lodge is situated on the banks of the Belize River in a lush tropical setting.  Non-fishing guests can depart the lodge daily to explore Mayan ruins, go bird watching or embark on a leisurely nature tour over land and by water, where you may encounter iguanas, crocodiles, dolphin and manatees, and the uniquely vocal howler monkey. The staff will gladly recommend and arrange local activities for non-fishing guests. Belize is also the perfect destination for the avid snorkler or SCUBA diver.

Cost

This 6-Day / 5 - Night trip costs $2,995 per person, double occupancy.  Please note that airfare from your home airport to/from Belize City is not included in the price of your trip. Guests are asked to settle any bar tab prior to departure. Additionally, gratuities for your guide are not included in this cost. The staff strongly believes tips are not guaranteed or expected, but rather earned. Non-fishing guests can accompany you for the entire trip at a reduced cost. A 50% deposit is required to reserve your trip.
